Buffalo gal, won’t you come out to fight?
The last time Beth Phoenix returned home to Buffalo, she left the Queen City “in heartbreak.”
Having lost her match at the former HSBC Arena, Phoenix—born Elizabeth Kocianski—knew that the next trip home had to be different. Phoenix wants to prove to her crushed hometown fans that she’s still “championship material,” and that’s exactly what she plans to do when she enters the ring at First Niagara Center on Sunday for the WWE Night of Champions.
“I’m going rewrite history for myself,” a determined Phoenix said.
Phoenix will battle nemesis Kelly Kelly, a model-turned-wrestler who Phoenix describes as “sweet like candy—but candy rots your teeth.”
One of the WWE “Divas of Doom”—along with co-wrestler and real-life friend Natalya—Phoenix has a reputation of being a hardass, a villainess, a “heel” as they say in the wrestling scene. But as much as it may surprise wrestling fanatics who are familiar with Phoenix’s tough-girl persona, she’s actually, well, your typical friendly, gracious Buffalonian who decided to follow her dreams—childhood dreams that led her to wrestling stardom.

With those words, The Glamazon had drawn a line in the sand – she was determined to change the very face of the Divas division. At SummerSlam two weeks later, though, she failed in her quest, coming up short in her title match against Kelly Kelly. At Night of Champions, however, Phoenix will once again have an opportunity to usher in a new era. For Kelly Kelly, a victory at the prestigious pay-per-view would go a long way in vindicating her as champion and proving yet again that she’s much more than just a pretty face.
The controversy in the Divas division was brought to stark relief when WWE.com published an article questioning whether or not the Divas division needed “saving.” While the story credited all Divas for their impressive work ethic, its insights clearly rankled some, who felt Beth and her “Divas of Doom” partner, Natalya, were being singled out for preferential treatment.
The dustup shone a long overdue spotlight on a division rich in legendary names such as WWE Hall of Famers Fabulous Moolah and Wendi Richter, as well as the incomparable Trish Stratus. The tension between Kelly Kelly and Phoenix demonstrates just how passionately these women feel about maintaining that historic legacy. Will The Glamazon forge a new era in the Divas division in her hometown of Buffalo, N.Y.? Or will Kelly Kelly finally silence her critics once and for all, convincing the WWE Universe that she’s truly earned the right to be Divas Champion?

When Beth Phoenix suffered a broken jaw in her Raw debut in 2006, the WWE Universe knew they’d been introduced to a Diva who wasn’t afraid to play rough. This setback did not deter Phoenix, however, and she was more powerful than ever when she returned, capturing the Women’s Championship on two occasions with dominating victories over the likes of Mickie James. In 2010, The Glamazon achieved another milestone, becoming only the second woman in WWE history to compete in the Royal Rumble and eliminating The Great Khali in the process. If her momentum continues, Phoenix will soon top a list like this.
